Around the 16th century, the first mentions of the grand celebration of Durga puja by zamindars
(landlords) in West Bengal. Different scripts point to different rajas (kings) and zamindars who
celebrated and financed the Durga puja for the whole village.
Since 1610, the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family has been organizing Durga Puja at their original
residence in Barisha, Kolkata. This is probably the oldest Durga Puja festival in
Kolkata. Nabakrishna Dev started Durga Puja at Shobhabazar Rajbari in 1757.
Durga Puja was declared as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, in 2021.

08:30 AM : VISIT AT RANI RASHMONI’S HOUSE
Rani Rashmoni (1793 – 1861) celebrated Durga Puja at her residence traditionally, since 1790.
Thakur Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa has worshiped here too.
The Durga Protima is in ‘Ekchala’, orange face and the costume is traditionally ‘sholar shaj’
(thermocol decoration).Rani Rashmoni was a pillar of strength in the mid-nineteenth century.
Her clashes with the British in India became household tales in her time.Rani Rashmoni founded the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Kolkata. She remained closely
associated with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa after she appointed him as the priest of the
temple.
09:30 AM : ARRIVE AT DR. PRATAP CHANDRA’S HOUSE
One of the cradles of cultural renaissance and freedom struggle in the country, the ancestral
house of Late Dr Pratap Chandra al;so have an unique legacy in celebrating Durga Puja.
10:30 AM : VISIT THANTHANIA DWARKA NATH DUTTA’S HOUSE
The founder of well known Shib – Durga Puja at Dwarika Bhawan is the great Dwarka Nath
Dutta. He was a believer of Shib and prefer peace rather than power. Once Dwarka Nath Dutta
dreamt a dream of “Hara Gouri Murti”. Soon he established the Shib-Durga Puja in 1855.The then
“Prabhakar” , a well-known Bengali magazine , edited by Shri. Ishwar Chandra Gupta, remarked
that “In Thanthania Dutta Bari, the Durga Puja was one of the three leading autumnal
ceremonies where ‘Shaibs’ were entertained and ‘Nauches’ heightened the pomp and éclat.
11:30 AM : DORJIPARA MITRA HOUSE
Famous traditional pujas in North Kolkata over two century old in beautiful architectural set up
and perfect ambience.
12:30 hrs: VISIT RAJA NABAKRISHNA DEV AND RADHA KRISHNA DEV’S HOUSE
Raja Nabakrishna Deb founded this family puja and further used it to enhance his business
interest. He invited the Bristish dignitaries including Robert Clive of India on the occasion of
Durga Puja in 1757. Thus began the tradition of business entertainment. This style of image is “
bangla- ek chala”
13:30 hrs: VISIT SOBHA BHAZAR RAJBARI
Sobha bazar Rajbari Durga puja is performed in both the houses the fam,ily owns set adjacent to
each other.”Baghbari” owned by Gopimohon Deb was constructed after the original residence
made by Raja Nabakrishna Deb. It was in the year 1757 after the Battle of Plassy, Durga Puja was
initiated.
